Fairmount PTO Creates Memorial for Students Lost in Fire Last Summer

The loss of students in a school district can have a devastating effect on a community. However, it can also strengthen a community when people come together in times of distress. The Fairmount Elementary community is finding strength in sorrow, and is choosing to celebrate and remember the lives of those they have lost, lives lost in our own backyard. The Fairmount Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is creating a memorial area on the school’s grounds to remember two students who tragically lost their lives in a house fire last summer, and is offering an opportunity for others in the community to leave a personal mark on this touching memorial.

Fairmount Principal Dr. Sue Sharp said, “The deaths of Jada and Jordie Hines deeply saddened the Fairmount Community. We have been planning a memorial all year in conjunction with our PTO.”

Jordie would have started fourth grade this year, and Jada was entering kindergarten. To carry on their memory, Fairmount and their PTO have chosen to create a memorial area on the Fairmount Elementary grounds that will include a Buddy Bench surrounded by memorial bricks. The Buddy Bench will help facilitate empathy, inclusion, sharing, and compassion for all students. One of the main purposes behind a Buddy Bench is to bring children together, even those who may not know one another.

“The bench and bricks will be a lasting reminder of two young lives that were lost too soon, and the outpouring of sympathy and support Fairmount received from our community,” Dr. Sharp said.

Beautiful, laser-engraved bricks will surround the bench. These bricks – along with personal engravings – are being offered to Fairmount families, community members, and anyone who would like to honor Jada and Jordie, so that they may leave a personal mark on the touching memorial.

The Fairmount PTO hopes you will join in paying tribute to these sweet and bright students of Fairmount. This memorial will be something that children and adults alike will be able to visit and enjoy for years to come.
