Fairmount Teacher Receives Missouri Lottery “Stars of the Classroom”

Fairmount teacher Stephanie Spellazza is the recipient of the Missouri Lottery’s monthly “Stars of the Classroom” Award for demonstrating excellence in the classroom. Spellazza was also honored to throw out the first pitch at the Cardinal’s game on Sept. 8.

Fredbird, the St. Louis Cardinal’s mascot, visited her first grade classroom to present Spellazza with a custom Cardinal’s jersey. After causing a little mayhem in Spellazza’s first grade class, he then set out to spread smiles and laughter around the entire school.

“We were so excited for Mrs. Spellazza when we found out about her being honored as the Missouri Lottery Teacher of the Month! What a great way to be recognized for the hard work and endless time she puts into preparing a wonderful education for her students,” said Tracey McAllister, Assistant Principal at Fairmount.

Spellazza was nominated by her neighbor. “[He] always hears me talk about my adventures as a first grade teacher. He saw that it was something I was passionate about, something that is always on my mind even on nights, weekends, and breaks,” Spellazza said.

Even from an early age, Spellazza knew she wanted to teach. She shared her knowledge and passion for education as early as elementary school. Using her cousins as students, Spellazza taught the same lessons she learned in school. She said, “I'm pretty sure they started kindergarten knowing how to multiply!“

Her spirit and passion for teaching continue to grow to this day. “Each year I am gifted a class full of unique and eager to learn students. I get to watch the light bulbs come on, track as these young minds grow, and inspire children to put forth their best.” It is easy to see that her students, and the staff at Fairmount, admire her. From her quirky sayings to grab student’s attention to her smile that can brighten up the whole classroom, Spellazza is definitely a star to her students.

When the school year ends, Spellazza loves seeing her former pupils in other classrooms. “I look forward to the day when I run into these first graders all grown up and get to see what they have become. Who knows, maybe one will come teach beside me!”
