Two Sisters from Fairmount Elementary Raise Funds for Lunch Heroes

To help combat hunger in the lunchroom and overdue lunch accounts, the District created Lunch Heroes to collect donations from the community to help those students who need it most. Hoping to help those in their school, Fairmount Elementary sisters Sydney and Lily L. decided they wanted to donate too.

The idea came from a fundraiser that Lily did with her soccer team to raise money for Safe Packs, an organization that gives backpacks with supplies to children entering the foster care system. Donors received a note and some butter cookies to say thank you. “The fundraiser went so well that we had some donors reach out the next year about the cookies and both Sydney and Lily really wanted to see if they could raise money to help more children,” said Nicole, the girls’ mother.

“Our mom said that our school was doing a program called Lunch Heroes, and we decided it would be fun to do [another fundraiser] again,” said Sydney. The family reached out to previous donors, neighbors, and posted on social media to share the word about their new endeavor. “As people began to take an interest, they asked for more information and then referred us to others that also wanted to help,” said Nicole. The cookies were made to order. “We delivered the cookies to their house, so they wouldn’t have to come to us,” said Lily.

In total, the girls raised $450 to donate to the Lunch Heroes program at Fairmount. “I hope that other students and families see their story and it sparks conversation in the home,” said Principal Dr. Cheri Oliver. “Not every family has the same opportunities and we all need help at times. Their kindness is an example for us all to remember to give back when we can.”

“I really hope that Sydney and Lily, as well as other children, see that it doesn’t take a complex, grandiose idea to help and you don’t even need to reach very far to make an impact,” said Nicole. “With a little thought and a bit more effort, they were able to raise a lot of money which then translated to a lot of meals; when we talked about how many meals it would provide, the impact really set in.” Through their efforts, Sydney and Lily were able to feed approximately 9 students for an entire month.

“Lunch Heroes has been a true gift for hundreds of our students, not only in our school but in our District,” said Oliver. “Many families have personally thanked me for the generosity shown by our community to support our students. We appreciate the continued support. It is so valued and we appreciate every thank you, kind word, and warm meal.”

Donations to Lunch Heroes are accepted through the District web store.
